Previous research
Hodr Engine began during Freya Shaw’s scholarship Master’s by Research in Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield. As part of this work, Freya built an early prototype of the engine and worked with blind and visually impaired participants to understand their previous technological education, the barriers they faced when using mainstream software, and the game genres and interactive experiences they wanted to create.
This research is documented in the downloadable thesis commentary. Hodr Engine has developed far beyond the prototype described in that publication, but the research remains an important record of the engine’s origins and includes first-hand accounts from the blind and visually impaired participants who took part, describing their requirements and experiences of accessing technology.
Freya's work has also been featured in CeReNeM Journal's score composition project. You can read Freya's writing and view a video of the project in progress here.
Further features for the Hodr Engine, along with an accompanying commentary presented as a written thesis, are in development as part of a scholarship PhD in Computer Science at the University of Bristol.
